Fungus Gnats or Damp Soil? Check the Shelf Before Buying Traps
Identify likely fungus gnats, trace them to damp potting mix, and correct moisture conditions before treating traps as the solution.
Small flies around a houseplant are often called fruit flies by default, but fungus gnats are a different pest and are closely associated with moist potting media.
Before buying traps, find the pot they are coming from and check why that pot stays damp.
Yellow sticky traps can catch adult fungus gnats. They are useful for monitoring and reducing the flying adults, but they do not correct a watering or drainage problem in the root zone.
First confirm where the flies are concentrated
Fungus gnat adults are small, delicate flies often seen running across or flying near the soil surface. Clemson Extension notes that adults are weak fliers and are commonly associated with the potting mix.
Watch the shelf for a minute before moving every plant. Which pot produces the most activity when you disturb the soil surface? Are the flies concentrated near one saucer or one persistently wet container?
That is a better starting point than treating the whole shelf as one infestation.
If the insects are centered around kitchen fruit, drains, or another source rather than the plant containers, verify that you are actually dealing with fungus gnats before applying houseplant advice.
Check whether the growing medium stays wet for too long
UMN says fungus gnats are more common in soils that remain continuously wet. Clemson similarly identifies overwatering as a common condition associated with indoor fungus-gnat problems.
That does not mean every damp pot has been watered incorrectly. Some plants need more consistent moisture, and containers dry at different rates depending on light, temperature, plant size, mix, and drainage.
The useful question is whether this particular plant is staying wetter than its own needs require.
If the top remains wet for long periods, the saucer holds standing water, or the pot never seems to move through a normal wet-to-drier cycle, fix that condition before assuming a trap will solve the problem.
Drying is plant-specific
Clemson recommends allowing the soil to dry between waterings for plants that can tolerate it, noting that drier conditions kill fungus-gnat larvae.
Do not turn that into “let every houseplant become bone dry.” The safe amount of dry-down depends on the plant.
Check the plant's own watering guidance and adjust toward the drier end of its acceptable range rather than imposing one schedule on the whole shelf.
Also empty standing water from saucers instead of allowing pots to remain in it.
Sticky traps are most useful as evidence and adult control
UMN notes that yellow sticky traps collect adult fungus gnats.
Place a trap near the affected pot if you want to confirm adult activity or reduce the number of flying adults. Then keep checking the soil conditions that support the larval stage.
If adults continue appearing despite a corrected watering pattern, or the infestation is severe, move from a shelf-level moisture check to a pest-management plan based on reliable Extension guidance and the exact product label for any control you choose.
This article deliberately stops before pesticide recommendations because identifying the problem and correcting excessive moisture are the first decisions.
Check the shelf, not just the pot
A dark shelf can slow drying compared with a brighter, warmer growing location. Closely packed pots can also make it harder to see standing water or test the medium individually.
That does not mean you should move every plant into stronger light. It means the watering routine has to reflect the conditions of the shelf you actually built.
If every pot receives water on the same day but dries at a different rate, the schedule is the problem. Water the plants, not the calendar.
