Grow Light vs. Sunny Window?
Choose a sunny window, a grow light, or both by observing the exact plant position and matching usable light to the plant.
Use the window when the exact plant position gets enough useful light for the plant you want to grow. Use a grow light when the location works but natural light falls short. Use both when the window contributes useful light but cannot provide a consistent enough growing period on its own.
The decision should come after observing the location, not from choosing a side in “natural versus artificial light.”
A window is simplest when it already does the job
Natural light requires no fixture, timer, cord, or mounting space. If a plant is well matched to the amount of light at the window, that simplicity is valuable.
Window direction is a clue, not a measurement. UMN recommends evaluating the duration and intensity of natural light and notes that buildings, curtains, season, and distance from the window affect what the plant actually receives.
Observe the spot where the leaves will sit. A bright room several feet from a window may provide less usable light than the room appearance suggests.
If the plant grows compactly and shows no signs associated with inadequate light, there is no reason to add equipment simply because the plant is indoors.
A grow light is useful when the location is better than the sunlight
Sometimes the best physical location is not the brightest one.
A dark shelf may fit the apartment perfectly. A kitchen counter may be easy to water. A pet-inaccessible zone may be farther from the window. In those cases, supplemental lighting can make a practical location usable for plants that need more light.
UMN notes that artificial light can supplement or replace insufficient natural light and that the amount reaching foliage changes with distance from the fixture.
The correct installation therefore depends on the exact light and the plant. Use the fixture manufacturer's mounting and operating instructions together with reliable plant-light guidance rather than borrowing a universal distance from another product.
“More watts” is not a complete buying rule
Consumer lights are marketed with wattage, brightness, color descriptions, and sometimes plant-light measurements. None of those numbers alone tells you whether the fixture will deliver a useful amount of light at your actual plant distance.
UMN discusses photosynthetic light measurements such as PPFD and explains that usable light falls as distance from a source increases.
For a small apartment, the practical buying questions are:
- Can the fixture cover the intended plant area?
- Can it operate at the distance the manufacturer recommends?
- Does the shelf or counter leave that much height?
- Can the light remain on a consistent schedule without making the room annoying to use?
A technically powerful light that cannot be positioned properly is still a poor fit.
A window plus light can be the most flexible option
You do not have to choose one source exclusively.
A plant near a useful window can receive natural daylight and supplemental light when needed. A timer can make the artificial part consistent; UMN recommends timers as a practical way to control supplemental-light schedules.
This is especially useful when seasonal changes make a window less reliable in winter than in summer.
The combined setup also lets you use a smaller artificial-light intervention than a completely dark location might require.
Compare the two setups in physical space

Neither column is automatically better. The choice depends on whether natural light is already adequate and whether the equipment required to supplement it actually fits.
Decide from the constraint you can name
Stay with the window when the plant gets enough useful light and the location is convenient.
Add a light when you can identify a specific light shortfall in an otherwise good location.
Move the plant instead when the proposed fixture creates more problems than it solves—for example, no vertical clearance, no sensible power route, or a location you do not want illuminated for long periods.
The goal is not to maximize equipment. It is to create a repeatable light environment the plant can use and the apartment can tolerate.
