What Can Grow in a Shallow Balcony Planter? Match Crops to Measured Soil Depth

Match crops to measured potting-mix depth in a shallow balcony planter instead of relying on the container's outside height.

A shallow planter is not defined by how tall it looks from the outside. What matters is the usable depth of potting mix after the drainage structure and headspace are accounted for.

Measure that depth before choosing a crop.

NC State Extension gives useful minimum-depth examples for container vegetables: lettuce and scallions generally need about 6–8 inches of potting mix, while carrots grow better with about 10–12 inches.

Those numbers do not guarantee success, but they are much more useful than guessing from the product photo.

Measure usable soil depth, not exterior height

Set a ruler inside the empty container and measure from the level where the potting mix will actually begin to the intended soil surface.

Leave some space below the rim so water can soak in rather than immediately washing over the edge. If the container has an unusual false bottom, reservoir, insert, or drainage structure, subtract that from the advertised height.

The number you need is the actual root-zone depth.

If the planter is marketed as 8 inches tall but holds only 5 inches of mix, shop and plant as though it is a 5-inch-deep container.

Use depth as the first crop filter

NC State's container guidance provides several examples:

Treat these as planning references from one Extension guide, not universal specifications for every cultivar. Variety, spacing, container volume, climate, and growing method still matter.

What the table does very well is show why a decorative shallow trough is not automatically a vegetable planter.

Below about 6 inches, be conservative

Once usable depth drops below the range NC State gives for many shallow-rooted vegetables, the crop list narrows quickly.

Do not force a large crop into a very shallow container because a social post says it can be “grown anywhere.” Choose a deeper planter or find crop guidance that specifically supports the exact plant and depth you have.

Very shallow containers also hold less growing medium and can dry more quickly, increasing the maintenance burden.

The honest answer to “what grows in four inches?” may be “not the crop you wanted.” That is useful information before seeds and soil are purchased.

Depth is only one part of fit

A 12-inch-deep pot does not make a pepper suitable for every balcony.

After depth, check:

NC State's planting calendars and crop guidance are region-specific for a reason: planting time and crop performance change with climate.

Make sure the container actually drains

Illinois Extension says drainage holes are important for ordinary container gardens.

Do not add gravel to the bottom expecting it to improve drainage. Illinois Extension specifically identifies that practice as a myth; putting coarse material beneath finer potting mix can make drainage behavior worse rather than better.

Use an appropriate container medium and a functioning drainage hole, then plan what happens to the runoff on the balcony.

Choose the crop after you know both depth and sun

A useful balcony decision looks like this:

Observed sun: about 5 hours in the current season Usable potting depth: 7 inches Available planter width: 24 inches

Now you can compare crops that fit the light and depth instead of browsing every vegetable seed packet.

That is much more reliable than starting with “I want carrots” and trying to make a shallow box comply.
