An enclosed plant cabinet is not automatically an upgrade from an open shelf. For a small apartment, start with the structure that solves the problem you can actually describe.

The fastest decision is this: keep the open shelf when the room setup already works for the plants and everyday care. Consider an enclosure when a more humid plant zone or a closable door solves a real household constraint.

Before choosing either route, write down what you are trying to change. Is the problem humidity, plant access, light, or simply the look of the setup? A clear problem makes the comparison easier and helps you avoid adding furniture that creates more maintenance than value.

Keep the open shelf when you do not want the extra monitoring that comes with managing a separate plant zone.

Option 4: use the furniture instructions as a purchase gate

A cabinet is still furniture, so the exact product instructions matter before you adapt it for plants.

IKEA's current US RUDSTA tall glass-door cabinet page lists a width of 16 1/2 inches, a depth of 14 5/8 inches, a height of 61 inches, and a maximum load of 11 pounds per shelf.

Those numbers are useful as an example of the measurements a renter should collect for any candidate cabinet. Measure the apartment space and compare it with the exact furniture you are considering.

IKEA's current RUDSTA instruction says the product must be securely anchored.

Verify that the required anchoring is permitted and feasible before choosing that cabinet. If the required installation cannot be completed, choose a different structure rather than treating the requirement as optional.

IKEA also says the RUDSTA can be locked with a standard padlock and is prepared for cable management.

That supports describing a closable furniture design and a manufacturer-provided cable-management feature. It does not establish pet-proofing, child-proofing, waterproofing, or suitability for added powered equipment.

The same IKEA page says a damaged edge or scratched surface can cause the glass to suddenly crack or break.

Use that as a material-handling consideration when comparing glass furniture with an open shelf.

Compare humidity and access as separate questions

A door can be useful even when humidity is not the main reason for the cabinet. The important step is to name the access problem rather than assuming that enclosure automatically solves every household issue.

Write down who will open the cabinet and how often you need to reach the plants. Compare whether a door improves that routine or merely adds another step.

If the reason is a closable furniture barrier, the RUDSTA example shows a cabinet that can accept a standard padlock.

Do not turn that feature into a broader promise. The source does not establish pet-proof or child-proof performance.
